We're officially announcing our next project! After the feedback received from our posts and some careful consideration we have chosen to move forward with Postal Valley!
Here are some pictures of the prototype in progress now:
As you probably know from our previous posts Postal Valley is a board game about delivering mail in the Wild West. Players are competing to earn the title of postman by delivering packages to locations around the board. Players can earn money by delivering mail to the towns along the way and spend that money in various ways to boost their efforts or sabotage their opponents.
The game is fairly simple, but there are some strategic mechanics at its core that really give it some power. So lets dive in to what makes this game so exciting!
Dice Drafting System: You might see in the pictures above a set of dice in the middle of the board and small graphic with symbols relating to the dice. This is the dice pool with which players move across Postal Valley. The pool contains one dice for each player that corresponds to their player color and one neutral (white) dice. At the beginning of their turn players pick a single dice and get different benefits depending if they picked their own dice, the dice of another player, or the neutral dice. When all the dice have been chosen the pool is rerolled. There is one more dice than the number of players so that the player who picks first naturally rotates throughout the game.
Asymmetric Ability System: In board game design we use the term asymmetric to refer to games where each player has unique abilities or actions. These actions are intentionally balanced to ensure the game is fair but they make the play experience a little different each time. In Postal Valley Each player is given 2 ability cards, a primary ability and a secondary ability. They may use either ability at any time on their turn then they are flipped face down and cannot be used again. They remain facedown until all players have used their corresponding ability (primary or secondary), at which time all players flip their ability card face up again.
Money System: Players earn money as they circle the board and deliver mail to the various towns. This money can be used for new abilities, obstacles for opponents, and cards that give players special actions or benefits. Players have to be careful about how they spend their money and utilize their resources.
That's the gist of the game! I'm excited to keep developing it and sharing more here on the blog!
